If you're thinking about cameras for your business, the first question is usually, "What's this going to cost me?"
It's a fair question, and a hard one to answer honestly without seeing your building. Here's what actually moves the price, so you know what you're paying for.
1. How many cameras you need
This is not the same as how many you want. A small shop might need four cameras. A building with a back lot, a loading dock, and two entrances might need twelve. The right number depends on what you're trying to see, not on a standard package.
2. Where the cameras go
Cameras inside a front office are simpler than cameras on a high wall or the back corner of a parking lot. Outdoor cameras have to handle Minnesota winters, and a higher mounting spot can mean more equipment and more labor.
3. How much cable has to be run
This is the part most people don't think about. The camera itself is only part of the job. Running cable through ceilings and walls takes time, and a longer or more complicated route costs more. It's also what separates a clean installation from messy wires hanging everywhere.
4. What the system can do
A basic camera records video. Smarter systems can send you an alert when a person is in the lot after hours, cut down on false alarms, and make it quick to find a specific moment in the footage. These features cost more up front. For many businesses, they save hours of scrolling through video.
5. Where the video is stored, and any ongoing fees
Some systems store video on a recorder at your building. Others store it in the cloud, which can mean a monthly or yearly fee. Ask about this before you buy, so there are no surprises later.
Waiting until something happens
Recently, we talked with a local business owner who had put off adding cameras. Their neighborhood felt safe and they hadn't had any trouble in years, so it never felt urgent.
Then they had a break-in, and equipment and tools were stolen. They did have a security system, but it didn't cover the area where it happened. With no footage, there was very little to give the police, and no clear idea of who to look for.
Footage doesn't guarantee someone gets caught. But it gives police something real to work with, and without it, they have almost nothing.
A quiet neighborhood doesn't mean a quiet night, and a camera that doesn't see the right spot can't help you. That's why we start with a walk around your property to find the weak spots before recommending a single camera.
Why we can't give you a price over the phone
Two buildings that look the same from the street can need very different systems. That's why we start with a free Security Analysis. We walk your property, learn what you're trying to protect, and recommend a system that fits your goals and your budget. You get a clear plan, with no pressure to buy.
